Circle has acquired an IBM intellectual property portfolio containing more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide. The technologies cover blockchain, banking, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply-chain verification and secure cloud operations.
Circle says the transaction makes it the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States. The portfolio is expected to support USDC, Circle Payments Network, the Arc network and tools for automated financial activity. Circle and IBM also plan to explore additional commercial opportunities.
The acquisition does not mean every patented technology will immediately appear in Circle products. The assets may support development, licensing and protection from intellectual-property disputes. The broader signal is that competition in onchain finance is expanding beyond liquidity and users toward ownership of foundational technical rights.
