Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy and Strategy formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium. Members have collectively pledged $15 million over three years for research and development related to Bitcoin's long-term resilience, including preparation for possible threats from quantum computing.
The consortium will not manage Bitcoin Core, select protocol upgrades or speak on behalf of developers. Each member will independently decide which researchers and organizations receive its funding. Day-to-day coordination will be handled by Mike Schmidt, executive director of the nonprofit developer funding organization Brink.
The initiative marks a new stage of institutional participation in Bitcoin. Large holders and infrastructure providers are beginning to finance not only commercial products around the network, but also the open research on which its security depends. Large quantum computers do not currently pose an immediate threat, so this is long-term preparation rather than an emergency change to Bitcoin.
